What Happens When a Building's Form and Climate Share the Same Logic: Lycée Schorge

Most architecture professionals who know Francis Kéré know the Gando Primary School. Fewer know Lycée Schorge, the secondary school that takes everything Gando established and pushes it further.

A Plan Drawn From Settlement Logic
Completed in Koudougou, Burkina Faso, in 2016, Lycée Schorge consists of nine interconnected modules arranged in a ring around a central courtyard. Locally sourced laterite stone and timber run throughout. Wind-catching towers rise from each roof module, pulling hot air out of the interior without any mechanical assistance.
The plan isn't arbitrary. It's drawn directly from the spatial logic of traditional settlements in this part of West Africa, where clusters of structures arranged around a shared centre create microclimates, manage movement, and define community life. Kéré didn't borrow the form as a decorative reference. He borrowed it because it works.
The Engineering Behind the Towers
What's worth understanding technically: the wind towers function as passive exhaust systems. Hot air rises, the towers channel it out, and cooler air is drawn in from the shaded courtyard below. No equipment, no energy cost, no maintenance dependency.

In a country where reliable electricity remains inconsistent, that isn't an aesthetic choice. It's an infrastructure decision, one that removes an entire category of operating risk from a public building that has to keep functioning regardless of grid reliability.
More Than a School
Lycée Schorge also includes a dental clinic for students, unusual for a secondary school anywhere on the continent. It speaks to what the project actually is: not a school building, but a piece of community infrastructure that happens to include classrooms.
The Broader Lesson
The lesson here isn't really about Kéré specifically. It's about what happens when a building's formal logic and its climatic logic come from the same source. The courtyard cools the space. The ring plan creates shelter. The towers exhaust heat. Nothing is applied on top of the design. Everything is load-bearing in some sense, structurally and climatically at once.
That's the standard the rammed earth and earth construction research keeps circling back to, and rarely reaches.
